Middelburg, 2.12.2024 – EP NL, one of the largest electricity producers in the Netherlands, took an important step today. The company strongly considers the decommissioning of one of its gas-fired power plants, Rijnmond 1, located in the port of Rotterdam, from 2nd quarter 2026.
Uncertain market conditions
The development of renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, is at no doubt a key step in reducing CO₂ emissions. However, their natural intermittency makes balancing the grid more and more challenging. In the Dutch and broader European electricity market, gas fired power plants still play a crucial role in ensuring security of supply and system reliability.
However, the power market hardly provides adequate revenue streams or sufficient predictability to sustain their future operations. Further investments and operations are not economically viable under current market conditions and design. EP NL therefore has started the plan to decommission the Rijnmond 1 power plant as of 31 March 2026.
At the same time, EP NL is willing to invest in new, flexible solutions that contribute to a sustainable and balanced energy market and has started to develop alternatives for its power plant.
Quote
“This decision aims at sending a clear signal to the Dutch market about the necessity of a capacity market or an equivalent mechanism. We call upon all relevant stakeholders to address the serious issue of a sustained reliability of the Dutch electricity supply, for which we remain firmly committed.” says Peter Černák, Chairman of the Board of EP NL.
