Higher temperatures and increased wind generation: spot prices drop
Short term:
Last week, from Tuesday evening onward, wind speeds increased in both the Netherlands and Germany. Strong wind generation persisted until the end of the week. Solar output in the Netherlands was variable but generally increased compared to previous weeks. Additionally, temperatures rose significantly throughout the week, with France experiencing a sharp drop in power demand. Furthermore, spot prices were pushed down by declining gas and CO2 prices. The average day-ahead gas price was 48.3 €/MWh, compared to approximately 54.5 €/MWh the previous week. The average Dutch power price was 106 €/MWh.
Gas prices for the coming months dropped by just over 3 euros, settling at 47 €/MWh. CO2 prices saw a significant decline, with the December 2025 contract falling nearly 6 euros to 73.9 €/EUA.
As expected, Dutch power contracts also dropped in price. March became nearly 14 euros cheaper, closing at 85.6 €/MWh. April and May fell by 9 and 4 euros, closing at 79.4 and 71.7 €/MWh, respectively. The clean spark spread for May improved by 4 euros but remained highly negative at approximately -45 €/MWh.
