Middelburg – The owner of Zonnepark Branderwal and EP NL have signed a multi‑year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the supply of sustainable solar energy and Guarantees of Origin. At the same time, an agreement has been concluded for the optimisation of a 20 MW / 80 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the same location.
Our role in the optimisation
In this project, we work closely with Zonnepark Branderwal to make the smartest possible use of both the solar park and the battery. While Zonnepark Branderwal owns the battery, EP NL is responsible for how the installation is deployed on the Dutch electricity grid. We control the battery, continuously monitor the market, and determine where the battery can deliver the most value: by helping to balance the grid, by ramping up or down quickly during peaks and troughs, or by relieving congestion in overloaded grid areas.
This means concretely that we act as:
- BRP (Balancing Responsible Party): managing energy balance and forecasting
- BSP (Balancing Service Provider): providing regulation and balancing services to TenneT
- CSP (Congestion Service Provider): delivering congestion management services in overloaded grid zones
Thanks to our market expertise and experience, we ensure that the battery stores, delivers, or reserves energy exactly at the right moments. This creates sufficient flexibility that strengthens the solar park and makes the overall energy system more resilient.
Solar PPA strengthens co‑location strategy
Parallel to the battery agreement, a 29 MWp solar PPA has been signed. In 2026, 2027, and 2028, EP NL will exclusively offtake all electricity produced by the solar park, along with the Guarantees of Origin. Because the battery and solar park are located at the same site, production and storage can be optimally aligned. EP NL also receives the right to temporarily curtail or shut down solar production. These arrangements ensure a robust deployment of both renewable generation and flexibility, fitting seamlessly into the future energy infrastructure.
Martin Bartošovič CEO EP NL: “This agreement strengthens our position in renewable energy and flexibility. The cooperation at Zonnepark Branderwal demonstrates how innovative a combined location can be when generation, storage, and market optimization come together”
About Zonnepark Branderwal
Zonnepark Branderwal is a 20‑hectare solar park located on the outskirts of Kootwijkerbroek (Gelderland). The park combines renewable energy generation with agriculture and is considered one of the most modern integrated solar parks in the Netherlands.
Characteristics
- Area 20 hectares
- Number of solar panels: approx. 42,000
- Annual production: enough for more than 7,000 households
- Co-location: solar park + 20 MW/80 MWh BESS
History
The site was originally the Bosch Beton factory (1968–2019). After the relocation, the area was circularly demolished and prepared for development between 2020 and 2021. In 2024, Zonnepark Branderwal became fully operational.
