Expected closure of the Rijnmond 1 power plant postponed

EP NL has decided to continue operation of its Rijnmond 1 plant, located in the Port of Rotterdam, with the intention to decommission it per 31 March 2027

In December 2024, it was communicated that Rijnmond 1 power plant was expected to be taken out of operation from the second quarter of 2026. Since then, market conditions have slightly improved compared to the situation in December 2024. This improvement creates an opportunity to develop alternatives for the power plant. Keeping the plant operational for a longer period of time also provides the option to offer grid congestion services, should the grid operator request them, and to contribute to security of supply.

EP NL is a strong supporter of a swift introduction of a capacity market. Although the likelihood of such a market being introduced has increased significantly, this development is independent of the decision to keep the plant open longer. A capacity market cannot be implemented within one year.

We see that the energy market is evolving and that room is emerging for investments that contribute to a more flexible and sustainable energy system. By potentially keeping the plant in operation for a longer period, we create time and space to shape this transition responsibly and efficiently.” says Martin Bartošovič, CEO of EP NL.
