Nobian and PZEM sign a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for Gemini Wind Park

Place: Amersfoort/Middelburg
Date 21.12.2023

Nobian and PZEM sign a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the purchase of electricity from the Gemini offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. Nobian will purchase 300 GWh of renewable energy in 2024, increasing to 500 GWh in 2025. The PPA covers the equivalent of 10-15% of Nobian’s annual electricity consumption and is comparable to the consumption of 90,000-150,000 households. A total savings of more than 500,000 tons of CO₂ emissions. The agreement is an important next step in achieving Nobian’s goal of 100% renewable energy and carbon neutrality by 2040 and enables PZEM to realize its ambitions as a reliable player actively contributing to shaping the future of the energy sector.

Gemini Wind Park
The Gemini wind park located in the Dutch North Sea 85 kilometers off the coast of Groningen, is one of the largest wind farms in the Netherlands and an important part of the renewable energy infrastructure. The total capacity of the wind farm is 600 MW (150 wind turbines with a capacity of 4 MW each), good for an annual electricity production of about 2.5 TWh, which is equivalent to the consumption of about 750,000 households. This represents a saving of 1.5 million tons of CO₂ emissions.

Director Energy of Nobian, Johan Hospers: “This agreement with PZEM is an important next step on our path to carbon neutrality with 100% renewable energy by 2040. We are committed to purchasing electricity in the countries in which we operate. This renewable electricity from the Gemini wind park will be used in our salt production and electrolysis. This is an important contribution to making our products and energy use more sustainable as part of our ‘Grow Greener Together’ strategy”.

Balancing supply and demand
PZEM, the buyer and program responsible party of the electricity produced by Gemini, is responsible for balancing the production of the wind park. PZEM acts as a crucial link between the supply and demand of renewable energy. This means that they constantly monitor the balance between the amount of energy produced and the market demand. PZEM’s goal is to seamlessly match production and consumption of energy on an hourly basis

Niels Unger, CEO of EP NL, stating:

“We greatly appreciate Nobian’s trust in PZEM. Electricity generation from renewable sources is growing rapidly..We aim for a balanced mix of different energy sources and are committed to continuous and sustainable growth in our production, supply and trading activities. We achieve this in part through long-term purchase contracts, such as the contract with Nobian”.

Nobian on its way to 100% renewable energy and CO2 neutrality. The power purchase agreement with PZEM is an important next step for Nobian in achieving its goal of 100% renewable energy by 2040. One of the ways Nobian intends to achieve this is through the purchase of green power to further electrify its production process.

Note for press
About PZEM
In 2023, PZEM strengthened its market position by joining the EPH Group, with EP NL as its new shareholder and owner. EP NL is a Dutch energy company focused on energy trading, the supply of electricity and gas, the management of a significant portfolio of sustainable PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements) and the operation of power plants. This partnership brings together more than 100 years of experience in the energy sector and enables us to realize our shared ambitions as a reliable and ambitious player that actively contributes to shaping the future of the energy sector. With a cumulative capacity of 2.6 GW, EP NL is one of the largest power plant operators in the Netherlands. Its modern, low-emission gas-fired power plants play a crucial role in providing the energy system with the necessary flexible capacity, enabling EP NL to respond quickly to changing market conditions such as fluctuating prices, increasingly unpredictable renewable energy sources and changing grid conditions.

Indispensable raw material
Salt, which can be found and mined in the Netherlands, is an indispensable raw material for a large part of the Dutch chemical industry. Approximately 40% of organic chemistry depends on salt. Salt chemistry provides essential building blocks for many everyday products such as building materials, pharmaceuticals, contact lenses and (sun) glasses, detergents and cleaning agents, flooring, PVC, paper and aluminum production, concrete substitutes and water purification. It also forms the basis for important components of the “new economy” such as insulation materials, LED lamps, wind turbine blades and lithium batteries.

Grow Greener Together
Last year, for the second year in a row, Nobian received an Ecovadis platinum rating for the objectives from its “Grow Greener Together” sustainability programme. EcoVadis is the world’s most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings. This maintains Nobian’s position in the top 1% of more than 90,000 companies rated by EcoVadis worldwide.

About Gemini Wind Farm
The Gemini wind park, located in the North Sea near Schiermonnikoog, has been an important part of the Netherlands’ commitment to renewable energy since 2017. As one of the largest offshore wind farms in the Netherlands, with a capacity of 600 MW, it provides clean energy to around 750,000 households and reduces CO2 emissions by 1.5 million tons per year. Gemini Wind Farm is an example of how large-scale renewable energy projects can contribute to the energy transition.
