The electricity label provides insight into the origin of electricity supplied to end-users. It does not provide information on the electricity produced.
Guarantees of Origin (GOs) already provided insight into the origin of renewable electricity. For electricity not generated from wind or sun, this did not yet exist. As a result, the CO2 footprint of this form of electricity was unclear. By certifying the entire electricity supply in the Netherlands, end users (consumers and businesses) will gain full insight into the origin of the electricity they use.
Publishing the origin of the electricity supplied thus makes the origin of electricity in the Dutch energy sector more transparent. It obliges electricity suppliers to substantiate the supply of electricity with a Guarantee of Origin (GvO) or a Certificate of Origin (CvO).
At EP NL, among other things, we opt for CO2-free nuclear generation. Indeed, electricity generated from nuclear power is released without CO2 and other greenhouse gases.
In 2018, the Energy Transition Progress Act came into force. This bill provides for a number of amendments to the Electricity Act 1998 and Gas Act to further facilitate the transition to a sustainable energy supply. Through an amendment, a system of full transparency was implemented. This is to create more transparency about the origin of electricity in the Dutch energy sector. It requires electricity suppliers to substantiate the supply of electricity with a Guarantee of Origin (green electricity) or a Certificate of Origin (grey electricity).
